Bariatric surgery. Hospitals, operations, causes and effects
Bariatric surgery is the most effective treatment for obesity today. With the help of surgery on the stomach and small intestine, operated patients begin to experience a feeling of satiety after consuming less food, thus consuming fewer calories.
In addition, bariatric surgery significantly changes the preferences and habits of the client when choosing food. As a result, the body weight is steadily decreasing, multiple concomitant diseases are cured (diabetes type 2, high cholesterol in the blood, etc.), and the life expectancy increases.
We work with bariatric departments of hospitals in Russia, Turkey, Italy, Germany, Spain, South Korea, India.
What bariatric surgery is needed for?
Gaining weight is very easy - almost all of us have ever done it. It is much more difficult, and most often impossible, to keep the weight achieved after losing weight at the same level for a long time.
Studies show that weight loss achieved with the best of the most conservative treatment methods is 3-5% of body weight. Only one patient out of seven can lose more than 10% of weight and maintain this result for more than a year. With the use of additional drugs achievable long-term weight loss is 6-8%.
With bariatric surgery, significant and stable weight loss is achieved. For example, according to the results of the Swedish SOS study, operated patients 15 years after surgery weighed 27% less than before.
Weight loss is a very important part of the whole process, but not the only one. Many overweight diseases are cured, or there is a noticeable relief of their symptoms (diabetes type 2, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart failure, etc.).
All this has a positive effect on health, as a result of which the life expectancy of the operated patients is longer than that of the non-operated patients who initially had the same weight. First of all, mortality from cardiovascular diseases and oncological diseases decreases.
Is bariatric surgery suitable for me?
Bariatric surgery is recomended if your body mass index is above 40kg/m2, or within 30-39.9kg/m2 with obesity-related diseases that can be cured or alleviated by weight loss (type 2 diabetes, arterial hypertension, heart failure, sleep apnea, hypercholesterolemia, degenerative diseases of the joints, female infertility).
Before resorting to surgery, patients should try other, more conservative ways to reduce weight. And although this is usually ineffective, it shows the desire and motivation of the patient to deal with their problems. Practice shows that patients who have tried to lose weight before the operation achieve the best results after the operation.
Obesity is a complex chronic disease that continues for a lifetime. Bariatric surgery is the only operation that has results for life. Not all overweight patients are candidates for surgical treatment. The decision to resort to surgery is always made individually, after thorough consultation with your surgeon.
