Radiation therapy center R-Spei

Radiation therapy center "R-Spei", Ulyanovsk

The center was established in April 2020 as part of a public-private partnership with the support of the Governor and the government of the Ulyanovsk region. The Center is located on the basis of the Ulyanovsk Oncological Dispensary (radiological building).

The purpose of the Center is to increase the availability and quality of medical care in the field of radiation therapy, reduce mortality, disability, side effects, and increase the life expectancy of cancer patients.

The center has an innovative TomoTherapy HD radiation therapy device, manufactured by the American company Accuray.

According to modern treatment standards, radiation therapy is recommended for every second patient with newly diagnosed malignant neoplasms. Some of the most effective methods of beam delivery to the tumor are implemented on the equipment of ACCURAY – TomoTherapy® and Cyberknife®, used in a number of high-tech medical facilities in the country.

More than 500 TomoTherapy systems have been installed worldwide, on which more than 250 thousand patients have been treated. In Russia, only 3 tomotherapy devices have been installed (NMIC im. Dima Rogachev, Moscow, "Reavita" CLT, Kazan and the newest TomoTherapy HD series - at the ErSpey Radiation Therapy Center, Ulyanovsk).

TomoTherapy is a unique integrated radiotherapy system for the treatment of the entire spectrum of tumors. This is the only installation in the world that combines a linear electron accelerator and a CT scanner, thanks to which treatment becomes highly accurate and safe. The TomoTherapy method is based on layer-by-layer irradiation of the tumor with a fan beam of photons with intensity modulation and control of the position of the patient and the target.

Patients receive a number of benefits by undergoing radiation therapy on a TomoTherapy device

  • Daily visualization allows the doctor to bring the therapeutic dose of radiation exactly into the tumor without touching critical organs and tissues. Every day, the doctor monitors the tumor recession.
  • A low dose of radiation together with interactive visualization ensures that patients with dental, orthopedic and other implants receive accurate treatment, since visualization is carried out without artifacts.
  • Simultaneous irradiation of several tumors, as well as extended tumors up to 135 cm, without joining the fields and rearranging the patient (it is impossible to carry out on other linear accelerators, because the irradiation field is only 40 by 40 cm)
  • The need for repeated irradiation is only growing (about 30% of all therapies are repeated irradiation) - it is possible to re-irradiate patients after any Varian, Elekta devices. In case of repeated irradiation on the tomotherapy device, the patient will get a chance for comfortable therapy and remission.
  • The least number of complications or side effects from radiation exposure. High survival rate, reduction of disability of patients, which is confirmed by the long-term experience of specialists of the world's leading clinics in the USA, Europe, Japan, as well as oncologists-radiologists of the Radiation Therapy Center "ErSpey" Ulyanovsk.

Tumors in which the TomoTherapy system is used

  • Intracranial tumors: meningiomas, benign or malignant tumors, irradiation of the entire brain;
  • Craniospinal tumors: medulloblastomas, ependymomas;
  • Tumors of the head and neck: cancer of the nasopharynx, mouth and throat;
  • Chest tumors: multi-focal lesions, pleural malignancies, mesotheliomas, non-small cell lung cancer; progressive stages of lung cancer;
  • Bone marrow tumors: myeloma;
  • Breast tumors: including complex breast tumors, anatomical shape changes, the entire internal system of the mammary glands;
  • Gynecological tumors: cervical and ovarian cancer;
  • Prostate cancer: early and late stages;
  • Bowel cancer
  • Tumors of other localizations: lymphomas, childhood cancer, sarcomas, multiple metastases, irradiation of the whole body, irradiation of the entire bone marrow.

Advantages of treatment at the R-Spei Radiotherapy Center

1. The center operates on the basis of the Ulyanovsk Regional Clinical Oncological Dispensary. Radiation therapy is performed on the most modern high-tech world-class equipment - the 5th generation TomoTherapy HD linear accelerator from the American company Accuray.

2. An individual course of treatment provides for a volume of radiation that is guaranteed to be sufficient for tumor damage, SAFE for adjacent healthy organs and tissues, allowing for an order of magnitude increase in the quality and life expectancy of the patient.

3. Treatment of malignant tumors is carried out according to international protocols of evidence–based medicine using modern techniques - Guided IG–IMRT (Intensity modulated radiation therapy - radiation therapy with modulated intensity and control of the position of the patient and the target).

4. The lowest COST of treatment in Russia, CIS countries and in foreign clinics (Turkey, Germany, Japan, USA), where TomoTherapy treatment costs from 13 thousand euros (from 1,300,000 rubles) and is an analogue of treatment in our Center. The cost of a course of radiation therapy depends on the physical condition of the patient, the clinical case, the complexity of the tumor form, the duration and volume of the course of radiation therapy shown to the patient. The cost of a course of treatment (from 5 to 40 procedures) costs from 150,000 to 300,000 rubles (including consultations with a radiotherapist, dosimetric planning and topometry). The treatment schedule is 5 days a week, the duration of the procedure is on average 5-15 minutes

5. Our doctors, medical physicists and operators have many years of experience and professionalism in the medical practice of oncology treatment (the average experience of doctors is 15 years). The chief physician is Natalia Vladimirovna Dengina, is the chief freelance radiotherapist of the Ulyanovsk region, head of the radiotherapy department of the UCOD, Candidate of Medical Sciences, associate professor of the Department of Oncology and Radiation Diagnostics of Ulyanovsk State University, member of ESTRO, member of the Board of RUSSCO. Experience in the specialty of 25 years.

All specialists of the Center have been trained by the equipment manufacturer. Doctors make presentations at conferences and congresses on oncology, constantly improve their qualifications:

  • Galchin Andrey Viktorovich, radiologist, 9 years of experience;
  • Andrey Aleksandrovich Zvezdkin, radiotherapist, 13 years of experience;
  • Artem Sergeevich Khatskevich, radiotherapist, 13 years of experience;
  • Svetlana Ildusovna Mezentseva is a leading medical physicist with 25 years of professional experience.

6. Collegiality of decisions, appointment of protocols and treatment regimens by three specialists – a surgeon, a radiotherapist, a chemotherapist.

7. The possibility of chemotherapy and chemoradiotherapy. Conducting laboratory tests.

8. Patient supervision from the first days of treatment at the clinic. We provide support on all issues regarding the treatment, provide a careful attitude to the patient's health, organizing a comfortable treatment process. We provide slippers and a towel for the course of treatment. English-speaking doctors and a curator work at the Center.

For nonresident patients, assistance with accommodation in an apartment (from 15,000 rubles per month) or a hotel (from 2,500 rubles per day), and it is also possible to provide a bed for the price list of an Oncological Dispensary for the entire course of treatment in a day hospital from 12,000 rubles and in a 24-hour hospital from 33500 rubles.

9. The possibility of obtaining a second expert opinion by radiotherapists from leading clinics in Russia.

10. Additional trust in the Center. The treatment takes place on the territory of the Ulyanovsk Regional Clinical Oncological Dispensary

The services of the R Spei Center are provided exclusively by appointment of an oncologist radiotherapist, both free of charge (according to quotas), within the framework of Compulsory Medical Insurance only for residents of the Ulyanovsk region, and on a paid basis for all residents of Russia, CIS countries, and abroad.
