Spinal surgery

Clinical activities are focused on the treatment of spinal deformities in adolescents and adults, on the treatment of degenerative and traumatic pathologies and on the complications of spinal trauma, paying special attention to minimally invasive surgeons and for complex spinal pathologies.

Clinical activities are mainly associated with degenerative diseases of the spine (cervical, thoracic, lumbar), disc pathologies (cervical, thoracic, lumbar), spinal fractures (traumatic, pathological, due to osteoporosis) and vertebral infections.

Reconstructive surgery

Clinical activity is mainly associated with patients suffering from tumors of the musculoskeletal system. In most cases, these are primary tumors in adults and children. The main specialization is associated with spinal tumors. Tumors of the spine create serious difficulties with reconstructive therapy. The reconstruction of entire segments of the column after removal of 2 or 3 vertebral bodies requires the use of surgical methods that pose significant difficulties for both the surgeon and the patient.

Other complex procedures are also proposed, including the treatment of tumors of the pelvis and tumors of the long bones of the limbs.

Surgical activity includes the treatment of patients with degenerative pathologies of the pillar, including arthritic primitive pathology and the consequences of scoliosis, rheumatoid arthritis, diseases that arose after surgery, all degenerative diseases of the hip and knee joints.

In addition, surgical procedures are offered for the diagnosis of cancer.

Clinical interest is focused on infections of bones and joints, which tens of thousands of Italians encounter annually and which are some of the most difficult problems in terms of treatment in orthopedics and traumatology.

Infections can cause pain, redness, wound secretions, and fever. However, in some cases, signs of bone infection are minimal and only blood tests and other specific tests can make an accurate diagnosis. Infections can affect the bones and joints due to injuries, surgical interventions, or bacteria entering the bones and joints, usually from another infectious site.

Surgical prosthetics

Operations are performed in outpatient clinics, i.e. offers procedures that do not require hospitalization and are characterized by rapid postoperative recovery.

- Arthroscopy of the knee joint;

- Arthroscopy of the shoulder;

- Small operations on the arm and foot.

The operations are carried out on an outpatient basis, there is a short observation and discharge on the day of surgery or the next day:

- Reconstruction of the cruciate ligament;

- Open revolving cuff surgery.

Thigh surgery

Clinical activity is focused on diseases of the hip joint.

Scientific and clinical areas: ceramic heads of large diameter in implantable prostheses.

The Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology of the San Donato Polyclinic is a highly specialized and innovative department, thanks to the materials and surgical methods used, especially in the treatment of traumatic and degenerative diseases of the hip joint, focusing on orthopedic and traumatic hip surgery.

Shoulder surgery

The activity is focused on shoulder pathologies and their treatment with surgical methods (mainly arthroscopic). Arthroscopic surgery on the shoulder is performed in the case of both degenerative and traumatic diseases.

Injuries to the tendons of the shoulder, in particular common ruptures of the muscles of the rotator of the shoulder, for the restoration of which arthroscopic surgery is used. Through the use of a camera, this method allows operations to be performed by performing small skin incisions. This has a beneficial effect on postoperative recovery. In addition, arthroscopic techniques are often used in reconstructive operations of the brachial ligaments.

In some cases, with repeated dislocation of the shoulder, an open operation is required. Arthritis of the shoulder joint, which often progresses and leads to serious motor impairment, can be treated using the latest implants.

This highly specialized department focuses on serious orthopedic surgeries for the shoulder, knee and hip joints.

Sports Traumatology

Clinical activities are focused on the prevention and treatment of orthopedic, traumatological and degenerative diseases, especially of the hip, knee and shoulder joints. The aim of the treatment is to restore the normal anatomy and function of the joint in the case of traumatic injuries, load and / or improper alignment (occupational overload syndrome, axial deviations, pathologies due to an incorrect trajectory), prevention of chronic injuries due to changes in the biomechanics of the joint.

To date, methods for treating joint degeneration can be surgical (chondral / osteochondral treatment, following the principles of restorative medicine) and non-surgical (instrumental therapies and targeted physiotherapy). These treatments can slow the progression of damage to degenerative joints, reduce pain, and improve functional autonomy.

Finally, in the case of extensive arthritic damage, surgical replacement of the joint (prosthetics) is necessary to treat the patient, if no other effective treatment methods can be used. The operation is performed according to the principles of maximum tissue and bone preservation using the latest techniques and implants.

Surgical prosthetics of the hip, knee and shoulder joints. Clinical activities focus on:

- Acute traumatic pathology, pathology due to functional overload and

articular (capsular-ligamentous) pathologies, arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder, knee and ankle joints, as well as surgical restoration of the joints;

- Treatment of osteochondral lesions (osteochondral lesions, for the treatment of which mesenchymal cells and blood growth factors and meniscus transplants are used);

- Treatment of injuries of the muscle tendons of the knee, ankle and shoulder joints, as well as the treatment of capsular-ligamentous injuries of the knee and ankle joints.
