San Donato Obesity Treatment Center, Milan, Italy

All operations are performed using video laparoscopic, minimally invasive technique. This technique provides the best aesthetic results and reduces postoperative pain. In the event of significant weight loss, functional plastic surgery may also be required.

The National Institute for the Treatment of Obesity (INCO) is a leading Italian center for the diagnosis, hospitalization and multidisciplinary treatment of obesity with a focus on the patient. The institute is led by Dr. Alessandro Giovanelli, one of the most active and experienced doctors in Italy in the treatment of obesity.

To date, more than 6000 patients, mainly women aged 26-35 years with an average BMI of 41.3, have been operated on at INCO (center for bariatric surgery).

In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of patients: if in 2011 350 operations were performed, then in 2014 - more than 750, and 2015 - about 1000.

The institute has an interdisciplinary team, whose members have all the necessary professional skills for the effective treatment of such a multifactorial disease as obesity.

All diagnostic and treatment services for obese patients are offered: in the areas of medical care, diet and metabolism, psychiatry and psychology, respiratory and motor rehabilitation, plastic surgery.

The patient manager ensures continued attention and assistance throughout the course of treatment, while the patient care nurse confirms the special approach to obese patients.

Beato Matteo Institute for Obesity Surgery (Bariatric Surgery)

The medical services offered by the Department of Obesity Surgery at the Beato Matteo Institute:

  • Selection of candidates for the surgical treatment of obesity
  • Preoperative preparation of selected patients
  • Treatment of obesity using laparoscopic surgery
  • Postoperative monitoring of nutrition and metabolism
  • Remodeling surgery after weight loss

Most operations are restrictive, such as the installation of intragastric cylinders and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy.

The latter type of operation is performed as the first or second alternative in case of low effectiveness of other types of bariatric operations (for example, gastric bandage, gastric plication, etc.). Remodeling surgery after weight loss, such as surgery to lift the abdomen, hips and hands of patients after bariatric surgery, is also proposed.

More than 1000 operations performed as the first operator:

  • Surgery for obesity: Adjustable gastric bandage, sleeve resection of the stomach, gastric bypass, shutdown of the duodenum, biliopancreatic bypass surgery, reoperation
  • Cholecystectomy
  • Gastric bypass surgery
  • Plastic surgery of abdominal hernia

Bariatric and metabolic surgery at the San Raffaele Hospital

At the San Raffaele Hospital, people with severe obesity and complex metabolic diseases can receive comprehensive and innovative support in the areas of diagnosis, nutrition and surgical treatment, under the guidance of a team of specialists in the field of clinical nutrition, surgery, psychology, psychiatry and anesthesiology.

The bariatric surgery program is important in the overall planning of treatment for obesity. It consists in positive changes in the route of food intake and absorption of substances, using a surgical procedure, the purpose of which is to limit the volume of the stomach or partially limit the absorption in the intestine. Currently, surgical treatment is used as an interventional therapy of the metabolic syndrome, especially in the case of type II diabetes mellitus, which can be significantly improved or even completely cured.

In addition to gradual weight loss, bariatric surgery has a positive effect on other indicators, such as blood pressure and lipid levels, as well as on the work of the heart, kidneys and liver.

Bariatric procedures at San Raffaele Hospital:

  • Intragastric balloon
  • Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding
  • Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy
  • Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery according to Ru
  • Repeated operation (removal of bandaging of the stomach, transformation of the sleeve of the stomach into a shunt, etc.)

All patients are offered an ERAS course (accelerated recovery after surgery) and standard postoperative courses.
