ESD - endoscopic submucosal dissection. Treatment of colorectal cancer without surgery

ESD - endoscopic submucosal dissection

ESD (Endoscopic Submucosa Dissection) is a successful method for the treatment of colorectal cancer in its early stages using special endoscopic equipment without abdominal surgery.

In colorectal cancer in the early stages, cancer cells have not yet invaded the lymph nodes, but have spread only through the mucous membrane and submucosa of the colon. Earlier, when detecting colorectal cancer, polypectomy was performed at an early stage by laparoscopic surgery. If the size of the polyps reached a maximum or there were difficulties in removing due to the complex location, the abdominal surgery was performed.

Recently, however, a tumor or polyp can be removed regardless of size or location. This is the so-called ESD (Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection), an operation to remove the mucosal area affected by a tumor and part of the submucosal layer using special endoscopic equipment.

Such endoscopic surgeries are successfully performed in South Korean hospitals.
