Arthritis

Arthritis is a form of joint disorder that involves inflammation of one or more joints. There are various types of arthritis,  the most common types are:

  1. Osteoarthritis (Dhatushyajanya)
  2. Rheumatoid Arthritis (AmaVata - Strotorodhajanya)
  3. Gout (Vatarakta)
  4. Ankylosing Spondylitis (Sandhigat Vata)

Arthritis is one of the most common diseases for which Ayurvedic Panchakarma Treatments are most effective. Being non-surgical, the treatment saves patients on cost, risks associated with surgery and allows them swift return to their personal or professional environment.

Osteoarthritis

It is the most common form of arthritis in the world. It is a painful, degenerative joint disease, involving hips, knees, neck, lower back or small joints of the hands.

Osteoarthritis is thought to be due to several causes like Nutritional Deficency, Overweight, Traumatic or damage from mechanical stress on joints with impaired self repair capability. This could be due to:

  • Misalignment of the bones due to injury, or by birth
  • Excess body weight
  • Loss of strength in muscles supporting the joint
  • Impaired nerve supply to the joint

Eventually, this wears away the cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones in the joint, causing bones to rub against each other resulting in reduced flexibility, pain and swelling. Over time, the joint may lose it's shape and/or bony spurs may develop worsening the pain.

For people coping with advanced osteoarthritis, the effects are physical and emotional as pain and decreased mobility makes performing even regular daily tasks difficult.

Current conventional medical treatments focus on reduction of pain and inflammation and have no effect on the natural course of the disease. Most common medicines prescribed are, at best, moderately effective. In addition, side effects and adverse effects of these treatments can be quite significant, and at times life-threatening. Many times, the ultimate treatment is joint replacement that comes with the inherent risks and cost that come with surgery.

Rhueumatoid Arthritis

It is an  autoimmune inflammatory disease in which the body releases enzymes attacking its own healthy tissues involving joints in the fingers, wrists, elbows, shoulders, knees, feet and ankles.

Symptoms include joint pain, swelling, stiffness, malformation, reduced movement and malfunction. There may be systemic symptoms such as fatigue, fever, weight loss, eye inflammation, anemia, subcutaneous nodules (bumps under the skin).

Disc Prolapse

It's commonly known as 'slipped disc'. It occurs when the disc between a vertebral joint is forced out through a weakened part of the joint capsule.

All the above mentioned joint problems as well as scoloiosis, sports injury, sciatica, etc, can be treated effectively using Therapies of Panchakarma like Elakizhi (Patrapotala Swedam), Podikizhi (Choorna Pinda Swedam), Pizhichil, Kati Basti, Dhara, Pichu and Lepam.

The management is directed towards relieving the inflammatory changes, releasing the spasm in the affected area, strengthening the supportive tissues holding the spine / joints ,nourishing the joints through improving the circulation.

This approach is also effective as a preventive way to avoid the possible spine and joint complications in people who had a history of back and neck problems
